Venezuela will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with 33 athletes in 12 disciplines, including weightlifters Julio Mayora and Keydomar Vallenilla, as well as fencer Rubén Limardo, who are seeking to repeat the feat of winning a medal.
The Venezuelan delegation is trying to improve its participation in Tokyo 2020, despite the withdrawal of athlete Yulimar Rojas, who hoped to renew her gold medal and defend the world record she set.
Julio Mayora won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, lifting 346 kilograms.
In April 2024, she qualified for Paris 2024, after her participation in the 73 kilogram category of the Phuket 2024 Weightlifting World Cup, which was held in Thailand.
“We will give it our all, as I always do, to take our flag to the top of the podium. We will certainly work very hard to win that medal,” Mayora said in an interview with the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV) in April.
Keydomar Vallenilla, meanwhile, will be looking to improve in the 89-kilogram category. At Tokyo 2020, she won the silver medal in the 96-kilogram category.
Anriquelis Barrios is another of the Venezuelan promises who returns to the Olympic Games, after suffering a knee ligament injury in 2023.
Barrios, an Olympic diploma winner in Tokyo 2020, hopes to win a medal in judo after finishing fifth in the Pan American and Oceania Championships.
Likewise, Rubén Limardo intends to repeat the feat of London 2012, where he won gold, in his fifth participation in the Olympic Games. The fencer will share the event with his brothers Francisco and Jesús, who also qualified for Paris 2024.
Athlete Robeilys Peinado achieved her third qualification for the Olympic Games in the pole vault discipline.
Peinado competed in Tokyo 2020 and qualified for Rio 2016, although she was unable to attend due to an injury to her left thumb, which required surgery.
The athletes who will not be in Paris 2024
World record holder Yulimar Rojas will not participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics due to a Achilles tendon tear of his left foot.
On April 11, she underwent surgery at the Cemtro Clinic in Madrid, Spain, according to a statement posted on the athlete’s social media.
Nevertheless, the world champion will be one of the flag bearers of the Venezuelan team at the Olympic Games, along with Julio Mayora.
For its part, Daniel DhersOlympic BMX medalist Benny Biel said goodbye to the Olympics after finishing 13th in a final event in Budapest, Hungary, on June 21.
