Jerez.- Nobody was counting on him, but Sebastian Vettel made his mark almost without flinching. The German driver, who had barely driven in the morning, returned to the track after lunch and, in a session of just two laps, set the fastest time at the Jerez Circuit.
The four-time world champion, who was driving the new Ferrari SF15-T for the first time, returned to the track after more than three hours without making an appearance and on his second lap he stopped the clock at 1:22.958 and then again at 1:22.620.
Vettel improved by one and a half tenths the time of his compatriot Nico Rosberg, who had completed a 102-lap sprint in his Mercedes W06 to set a time of 1:23.106. Until Vettel’s star appearance, Rosberg had set the fastest time in the first session of the official Formula 1 tests that are being held at the Jerez Circuit for four days, until next Wednesday.
The Mercedes W06 surprised with its speed and, above all, its reliability, which allowed it to run five times more than Red Bull, Ferrari and Williams.
