Application to reduce food waste has arrived in Chillán – La Discusión 2024-07-24 11:02:56

Residents of Chillán can now rescue food thanks to the arrival of Cheaf, a mobile application that seeks to reduce food waste by using a technological platform that allows supermarkets and stores to offer their surpluses at half price.

“We have been operating in supermarkets in Chillán for several weeks now and we are working hard to continue expanding our presence in this and all regions of the country, because we are convinced that together we can reduce food waste,” said Rodrigo Ramírez, country manager of Cheaf Chile.

He stressed that food waste is responsible for around 10% of greenhouse gases emitted, making it one of the main culprits of the climate crisis. In Chile, he added, more than 1.62 million tons of food end up in landfills every year.

“It is unbelievable that with the current cost of food and the number of people globally who do not have access to it, food ends up in the trash. That is why, at Cheaf, we always say that food waste is a serious problem with a simple solution: rescuing it, and we are proud to be contributing to that solution,” said Ramírez.

Currently, on the Cheaf app, you can find food at a 50% discount in six categories: fruits and vegetables, pastries, dairy products, baked goods, cold cuts and prepared meals, significantly reducing the amount of food that ends up in landfills, while delivering quality food at a lower cost to families. In fact, they estimate that they are currently rescuing around 8.5 tons each month.
