IMF Director Highlights Paraguay’s Economic Stability and Commitment to Renewable Energy

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, highlighted that Paraguay is one of the most economically stable countries, with rapid growth, and one of the few in the world that is betting on renewable energy as the main source for its development.

Georgieva made her statements during her visit to the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Hernandarias, in order to learn about one of the largest dams in the world for generating clean and renewable energy.

The visit to the hydroelectric plant was the first activity in the framework of his visit to the country. At noon on Monday he will hold a meeting with President Santiago Peña, at the Government Palace. The president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Ilan Goldfajn, will also participate in the meeting.

“Our relations are strong and it is a great honour and pleasure for me to make this visit,” Georgieva said when assessing her technical mission in Paraguay.

The technical tour of Itaipu included a visit to the central control room, the turbine shaft, and elevation 144 where the main dam and pressure pipes are located.

“It is an honor that international visitors always see Itaipu as an attraction and visit the Hydroelectric Power Plant. We express our hope that good negotiations can be generated between our country and this entity, the most important in international monetary terms, and that this can mean good results for Paraguay,” said director Justo Zacarías Irún, referring to the presence of the head of the IMF in the country.

For her part, the managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, expressed her joy at learning about the binational dam and everything it generates for the well-being and development of the two nations that own the hydroelectric project. She also praised Paraguay’s stability in economic terms, stating that Itaipu is a key player in this regard. She asserted that the Hydroelectric Power Plant is an example of human ingenuity, technology and friendship between two countries.

In addition to her meeting with President Peña, Georgieva plans to meet with other Paraguayan authorities, female leaders and representatives of the private sector and civil society.

Among the activities is the Economic Perspectives discussion, which will also feature the participation of the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Ilan Goldfajn. The event will take place this Tuesday, July 23, at the Central Bank of Paraguay.
