As part of the closing events of Nicolás Maduro’s campaign, this Monday, July 22, during his visit to the city of El Vigía, Alberto Adriani municipality, Mérida state, the head of government ordered the immediate opening of the war bridge over the Onia River, a work that during his visit on June 13, he ordered to be completed in 20 days.

The opening of the bridge that connects the states of Mérida and Táchira was carried out by the Minister of Transportation, Ramón Celestino Velásquez Araguayán and the governor of the state of Mérida, Jehyson Guzmán.

This bridge replaces the old iron bridge, a structure that after almost five decades of operation, collapsed as a result of the landslide of the mountain near the bridge, an event that occurred on February 8, 2023.

The new bridge has two channels about 60 meters long, and has reinforcements in the railings in the central part. Likewise, the rehabilitation and demarcation work of the road was completed, up to the border with the state of Táchira.

Less than 24 hours before the inauguration, traffic on the bridge was interrupted for a few minutes, apparently to remove surplus material from the construction work by the Puente Cagua company, responsible for the construction of the bridge, causing a traffic queue and rumours about problems with the structure, which were quickly cleared up, and normal traffic was restored on the new bridge.
