The results of microbiological analysis of 3,361 bathing places (1,286 freshwater and 2,075 seawater) during the 2023 bathing season showed that nearly 90.4% of the places were of good quality.

The water quality health control carried out by the Regional Sanitary Service (ARS) monitors more than 3,300 freshwater and seawater swimming sites in France every year. During the 2023 bathing season, approved laboratories collected more than 34,000 water samples for analysis.

The classification criteria for this classification are set by this directive and are based on the results of a health control analysis of the following two situations: Microbial parameters Escherichia coli and enterococci The assessment period is 4 years, with separate values for seawater and freshwater. For bathing waters subject to classification, one of the following four quality levels will be assigned: “Excellent”, “Good”, “Acceptable” or “Unsatisfactory”.
The presence of these indicators in water indicates more or less the degree of contamination from fecal sources depending on the concentration recorded. These microbial bacteria do not themselves pose a general elevated threshold risk to swimmers, but their presence can indicate the concurrent presence of pathogenic bacteria.
Poor quality bathwater can lead to health problems (dermatitis, gastrointestinal issues, ear infections, etc.) that are often benign but are most likely to be exposed to the most vulnerable. Therefore, understanding and controlling bathing water quality is a major public health issue. If contamination occurs or risks are identified, temporary swimming bans may be imposed with public information.
By 2023, 90.4% of all identified sites (marine and freshwater) will have water quality rated as excellent or good., of which good quality accounts for 74.9% and excellent quality accounts for 15.5% (see the figure below). This represents the total 3038 sites. In addition, 94.5% of bathing establishments were rated as being of at least adequate quality.and comply with European directives.
In 2023, 2.9% of all identified sites were classified as of insufficient quality, or 99 sites. Since 2013, the proportion of bathing establishments that do not meet the quality standards has increased from 3.5% to 2.9%.
87 bathing places cannot be classified due to insufficient sample size and are included in the “unclassified” category.
There are no risks associated with swimming in regulated sites where the water quality meets regulatory values. Therefore it is recommended:
Bath in a controlled area subject to authority health control Understand the quality of the water and comply with swimming bans (displayed on site and on the bathing website) Avoid swimming after severe storms that may result in uncontrolled discharges.
