Bersani-Vannacci, for the prosecutor the insult to the general is defamation. What the former secretary of the Democratic Party risks –

A piece of news that is creating a small earthquake in the political world. And that highlights the subtle but clear difference between criticism and offense. The Ravenna Public Prosecutor’s Office believes that the statements made at the Festa dell’Unità in the Romagna city on September 1, 2023 by Pierluigi Bersani towards General Roberto Vannacci, now a member of the European Parliament for the League, constitute aggravated defamation. Specifically, according to what was reported by the Ansa agency, the criminal action, with subsequent communication to the GIP office, was exercised because of the epithet “idiot”. At this point, a criminal conviction decree could be issued which, if necessary, Bersani could oppose by canceling it, but ending up on trial.

Vannacci wins against Egonu in court after defamation accusation. The reasons

The investigations, delegated to the Ravenna police (Digos section) had concerned both the comment made during that evening and other possible interventions of a similar nature by Bersani on Vannacci. On at least a couple of occasions Bersani had returned to the subject in front of the cameras of La7, even after having learned of Vannacci’s complaint from the newspapers: the journalist Lilli Gruber had also asked him if with his phrase he was not giving legitimacy to profanity. In particular, from the stage in Ravenna, commenting on Vannacci’s best-selling book (‘Il mondo al contrario’), Bersani had said: “I have only read the summaries. When you read that stuff you think: let’s disband the army, let’s disband the institutions, let’s make a huge bar, Bar Italia. I still have one question: if in that bar it is possible to call a homosexual abnormal, is it possible to call a general an idiot?”.

Vannacci’s lawyer, Massimiliano Manzo, also intervened on the issue. “We are very happy. If the news is confirmed, it would attest to how even the prosecutor considered that statement by the Honorable Bersani to be clearly defamatory. It seems, in essence, that the prosecution has gone in the direction we hoped for”.
