The Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) announced today that it has become the first exchange in the world to obtain the ISO 14068-1:2023 carbon neutrality certificate issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI) after a rigorous evaluation and review process. The award not only reflects Taiwan Stock Exchange’s progress in environmental protection and sustainable development, but also highlights its leadership in global sustainability initiatives.

BSI Group Insurance Services Director and Board Member Harold Pradal personally presented the certificate to Sherman Lin, Chairman and CEO of the Taiwan Stock Exchange, during his visit to Taiwan. BSI Group highly recognizes the efforts and achievements of the Taiwan Stock Exchange in promoting sustainable development with the highest international standards.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange has long been committed to sustainable development practices, continuously building sustainable resilience, and improving its operating mechanisms and quality in environmental, social and governance aspects. In early 2023, the Taiwan Stock Exchange responded to Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero transformation goal by formulating a carbon neutrality roadmap. The Taiwan Stock Exchange, in consultation with Ernst & Young, and with reference to the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), set a short-term target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 37.8% from 2022 to 2030 to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. The ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Between 2022 and 2040, TWSE aims to reduce emissions through energy-saving measures, equipment replacement and the use of renewable energy. Any remaining greenhouse gas emissions will be offset through carbon credits to achieve annual carbon neutrality. From 2040 to 2050, the Taiwan Exchange will continue to offset residual emissions and unswervingly pursue the goal of net-zero emissions.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange is committed to becoming a benchmark for Taiwanese companies and plays an important role in complying with government policies and international standards. In addition to carbon neutrality certification, the Taiwan Exchange also leads by example in promoting the sustainable development of Taiwan’s listed companies. It works with businesses to achieve global net-zero emissions targets and create a prosperous, productive and sustainable future.
