NASA warns about which places on Earth will be uninhabitable by 2050

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA for its acronym in English) Warning about which places on Earth will be uninhabitable by 2050because the high temperatures At a global level it is one of the most worrying phenomena for human survival, since its consequences affect health of the population, to the point of putting the lives of many people at risk.

And as planet Earth warms, the consequences become increasingly severe.

How does global warming affect health?

For example, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explains that the Extreme heat and poor air quality increase complications from heart and respiratory diseases underlying.

Promotes or worsens conditions such as asmathe renal insufficiency and premature births, and as temperatures rise, there will be more heat-related illnesses and deaths, in both urban and rural areas.

For this reason, scientists focus their efforts on also studying the stress that heat causes in the human body, since Extreme heat has been identified as one of the leading causes of death in several countries.

A recent study shows that between 1990 and 2019, more than 153,000 annual deaths worldwide were related to heat waves.

Asia was the most affected region in absolute terms, while Europe had the highest relative mortality considering its population.

Who did the research?

The research, led by Yumung Guo of Monash University in Australia and with Spanish collaboration, used data from the Multi-Country Multi-City Collaborative Research Network (MCC).

This study analyzed daily deaths and temperatures in 750 locations in 43 countries.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, 3,405 deaths were recorded annual heat-related deaths, equivalent to 62 per ten million inhabitants.

NASA warns about which places on Earth will be uninhabitable by 2050

In this context, NASA warns of the risk that certain areas of the Earth will become uninhabitable by 2050 due to extreme weather conditions.

Using a thermal index called “wet bulb”scientists project how the human body will be able to cope with climate change.

Wet bulb temperature is the lowest temperature to which an object can be cooled when moisture evaporates. The lower the wet bulb temperature, the easier it is for us to cool down.

“The wet bulb is the lowest temperature to which an object can be cooled when moisture evaporates from it. This index measures our ability to cool down “through sweating in hot and humid conditions, and predicts whether these conditions may be dangerous or fatal to our health,” NASA explained.

Colin Raymond of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the NASAhighlighted in a 2020 study that an index of wet bulb above 35°C for prolonged periods poses a significant risk to human life.

“Beyond 35 degrees Celsius wet bulb, no amount of sweating can cool the body to a safe temperature,” Raymond said.

“A wet bulb index above 35°C for six consecutive hours could pose a fatal risk to human health.”

Raymond is the lead author of a 2020 study on extreme heat and humidity, published in Science Advances.

Which regions of the world will be uninhabitable by 2050, according to NASA?

The report The Future we don’t wantdeveloped from data from four NCCS (NASA Center for Climate Simulation) satellites, reveals that these regions could exceed these critical temperatures in the next 30 to 50 years.

  • South Asia
  • The Persian Gulf
  • The Red Sea

In Madrid Spainpart of the Valencian Community and Andalusia, will experience 3 consecutive months of temperatures of 35º C or more in 2050but these regions are not as humid as the more tropical areas.

NASA climate models also show that by 2070, eastern China, southeast Asia and Brazil will also be at risk.

In USAthe midwestern states, such as Arkansas, Missouri e Iowa, could reach these critical limits in the next 50 years.

The NASA’s warning about the risk is clear: If they are not taken significant actions to combat climate changelarge areas of the world could become uninhabitable in the not too distant future.
