The president of SYRIZA Stefanos Kasselakis is in Cyprus who met with Nikos Christodoulidis and expressed his undivided support for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus conflict within the framework of the decisions of the UN Security Council.
Stefanos Kasselakis, during his meeting with Nikos Christodoulidis, expressed his emotion for his presence in Cyprus on the occasion of the completion of 50 years since the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation. He reiterated the permanent position of SYRIZA-PS on restarting the talks for the solution of the Cyprus issue, from the point where they were interrupted in Crans-Montana, within the framework of the UN Security Council Decisions, for a solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, for the benefit of the whole Cypriot people, without guarantees and occupying troops. Continuing, the president of SYRIZA-PS expressed his support for the continuation of the mission of the UN Secretary General’s special envoy in this direction.
Stefanos Kasselakis advocated the interconnection of the Cypriot issue with Euro-Turkish relations, so that Turkey commits to the dialogue and is not allowed to use it opportunistically to return to tension after securing the benefits it seeks.
At the same time, Stefanos Kasselakis pointed out the special importance he attaches to the humanitarian dimension of the Cypriot tragedy, noting that SYRIZA-PS will take initiatives to highlight the issue of missing persons in the European Parliament.
As the same announcement states, for his part, the President of the Republic of Cyprus noted the importance of Stefanos Kasselakis’ visit on the 50th anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation.
The president of SYRIZA-PS was accompanied by the diplomatic adviser, Dimitris Papageorgiou.
After the end of the meeting St. Kasselakis said he was “moved” to be in Cyprus, “fifty years after the illegal invasion of Turkey, the results of which, experientially, so many generations have now grown up and see them, even consider them for granted”.
“This status quo, which must be changed by finding a fair and sustainable solution, always within the framework of the UN resolutions, with the solution of the Cyprus problem starting from where it stopped in Crans-Montana in 2017”, he underlined in his statements, expressed his support “for the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s envoy in this direction”, as well as for “the integration of Cyprus into Euro-Turkish and Greek-Turkish relations”.
“The Cyprus issue must be an integral part of Euro-Turkish relations. And within this context we will take initiatives in the European Parliament, including the issue of the missing persons, which the Commission is currently dealing with in order to be able to proceed with the identification of our missing fellow citizens – both Greeks and Greek Cypriots”, he said and continued :
“We unequivocally support a solution for a bi-zonal bi-communal Federation, without guarantees and without occupying troops. We support the efforts of the Cypriot people to be able to bring a solution that incorporates their operational demands so that it can be a credible solution. Without secret diplomacy, but with transparency.”
“If tomorrow, when we hope everything will go smoothly, there are provocative fiestas and signs or manifestations of hatred from Turkey, know that SYRIZA and I personally condemn absolutely any such manifestation of the opposite side, which will obviously not be in line with the spirit of good neighborhood. Once again, the official opposition supports the effort for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cypriot issue and will stand by the Greek Cypriots for as long as necessary”, concluded Stefanos Kasselakis.
