At the age of 74, the well-known archaeologist, honorary curator of Antiquities, Michalis Andrianakis, breathed his last on Sunday 21/07/2024.
As reported by “Chaniotika Nea”, he was hospitalized with health problems for the last three weeks at the Neurological Clinic of the Chania hospital.
Michalis Andrianakis he was an active citizen as well as a field archaeologist until the last moment. It is typical that three days before he was admitted to the Hospital and despite the health problems he was facing, on June 27 he went to Theodorou for the event in memory of Biaggio Giuliani, commander of the Venetian guard of the island of Agios Theodoros. He was also a speaker at an event for Giuliani that same afternoon at the Spiritual Center of Chania.
Michalis Andrianakis had a rich writing career. On June 11, he presented his new book: “Chania: Monuments and Memory”. The same he never stopped fighting for the protection of the cultural heritage and monuments of Chania.
Michalis Andrianakis was Archaeologist of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (1975-2000) and director of the 13th and 28th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities (2000-2011). He was also President of the Scientific Committee for the restoration of Byzantine and Venetian Fortresses in Crete (2004-2013). He worked all these years in the research and restoration of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Crete.
