The first president of the nascent Frente Amplio Ñuble will be a woman, yes or yes – La Discusión 2024-07-23 14:28:21

This weekend, the nascent Frente Amplio party – the largest in the country, according to the number of members – will hold its first internal election to form its organizational structure.

While at the national level the party started off with controversy, due to the failed registration of the list of deputy Gonzalo Winter for the political committee (which includes names very close to the President, Gabriel Boric), and the registration period had to be postponed; at the regional level the party has been campaigning, and no matter what, it will be led by a woman.

The elections will be held online on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July, and all RD and CS members who signed up to three months before the election will be able to vote.

All the collegiate and individual bodies of the new FA will be elected, from the communal leadership to the national leadership, including the courts and delegations to the central committee of the party.

In Ñuble, around 900 people are called to vote on the electoral roll. There are two lists that will compete at the regional level, which are made up of militants from both RD and CS. This Friday, the 12th, a debate will be held between the two at the FA headquarters, located at 18 de septiembre 875, second floor.

Unity for the Broad Front

One of the lists that will compete is ‘Unity for the Broad Front’, led by the current president of CS, Francisca Leyton Cid, close to the ‘Overflow the Possible’ sector, linked within the party to President Gabriel Boric. At the local level, its ranks include the regional minister of Economy, Erick Solo de Zaldívar, and it represents a variety of sectors of the Broad Front. Its members, in addition to Leyton, are Beatriz Muñoz Baquedano (CS), Bárbara Valderrama Gutiérrez (CS), Patricio Avendaño Medina (RD) and Ricardo Arriagada Acevedo (RD).

A graduate in Humanities and a Law student, Francisca Leyton recalled that “on July 1st we were established as a single party, which is now the largest in the country, with more than 62 thousand members. We hope that this democratic exercise will be carried out well in our region and throughout the country. We invite all members to get informed and participate in the election this Saturday and Sunday, to actively join the party activities, and together we will work for the unity of the Frente Amplio.”

He added that “we have worked hard from the militancy of the region to present a collective project in these elections. Our list is made up of people who represent the positions and desires of the vast majority of Frente Amplio militants in Ñuble. And from that transversality, and with a view to unity and fraternity, we are going to build a party,” he said.

Ñuble Wide

The ‘Ñuble Amplio’ list will also seek to lead the local Frente Amplio. Its essence is localist, and it is led by Nicole Suazo Barriga, who represents independent sectors, as well as the ‘Trazo’ trend, which brings together more critical and harsh representatives within CS and RD, such as the former regional Presidential delegate, Gabriel Pradenas. She is accompanied by the regional minister of Labor, Eduardo Riquelme Lagos (RD); Nirvana Sánchez Salgado (RD), Víctor Vega Rodríguez (CS), and Silvana Villanelo Delgado (CS).

Nicole Suazo is a union leader, a midwife by profession, and mother of two girls and a boy. She was part of the last central committee of CS, and was also interim general secretary of the region in the previous period.

“As a list, we believe that linking public service, union work, motherhood, political experience and community work with young people in the life stories of those of us behind this project creates a diverse human group that has allowed us to conclude that unity is only possible if we manage to bring all points of view together,” she said.

He added that “we decided to put forward a list for the regional leadership of the Frente Amplio to be an alternative to the logic of the national negotiations that were taking place, taking into account the differences and particularities of this territory. It is a list without tendencies or ‘lots’ behind it, something that we believe distances us today in Ñuble. We believe that we must move forward from the construction of a left-wing alliance as broad as possible, and in concrete terms, that means moving from diagnosis to action, and one of the steps in that transition is to put our project on the table with a regional leadership that allows us to carry out that positioning.”
