Challenges in rapeseed fields: how to save the crop without chemicals | Business

Abundant and high-quality rapeseed harvest without harmful chemicals – is it possible?

After the European Union banned the use of various harmful chemicals in agriculture, such as defoliants, and severely restricted the use of desiccants, and after the transition period for glyphosate was announced, Lithuanian farmers are facing new challenges when preparing the rapeseed harvest.

While glyphosate can still be used for weed control during the transition period, applying it to canola before harvest in the absence of weeds can still result in fines.

“Drying is necessary so that all the rapeseeds reach maturity at the same time. And there wouldn’t be some green and some already overgrown. Therefore, it is very important to compare all parameters of the quality of the harvest. Some farmers consider not applying any pre-harvest products, but this can lead to significant losses. In rapeseed crops, it is difficult to ensure uniform maturation of plants under unfavorable weather conditions, so the spontaneous bursting of pods can lead to considerable yield loss,” said Jonas Ignatavičius, head of innovation at biotechnology company Nando.

It is impossible to ensure even ripening of all canola in the field and ideal meteorological conditions during the crucial weeks, let alone the elimination of morphological, anatomical and biochemical factors.

Scientific studies confirm the effectiveness of bioproducts

Although, according to J. Ignatavičius, many farmers still use glyphosate, Nando’s offers alternative solutions. The “Smart Contact” technology of the bio product ensures the sealing of the rapeseed pods, reduces the moisture level in the seeds and prevents self-sprouting. This is especially important during late harvest or rainy weather.

The study of rapeseed pod sealants carried out at the Academy of Agriculture of VMU confirmed and scientifically proved that such sealants reduce the loss of rapeseed, especially when the crop is harvested at a non-optimal time. The scientific study was carried out with several different sealants over three years.

The results showed that even in different years and when different meteorological conditions prevail, these preparations help to save a significant part of the harvest – its losses are reduced by 35% on average. Even after considering the purchase price of the preparations, the benefit obtained from the harvest fully repays the investment (in the case of the most effective preparation – Smart Contact – the return on investment reaches 3.5 times).

Temporary alternatives and a sustainable future

For those still using glyphosate during the transition period, Nando’s offers a pH Water Power product that stabilizes glyphosate and increases its effectiveness.

Although giving up some chemicals poses some difficulties for farmers, in the long run it will contribute to sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Biotechnological innovations will help farmers adapt to new requirements and preserve yields while reducing negative environmental impacts.
