SANTA, THE MAKING OF A STAR 2/6 – On the Côte d’Azur, Santa Eckert-Cotta, along with her friends Adam and Line whom she met in school, founded the group Hyphen Hyphen with the goal of conquering France and the world. This journey began with small shows funded by donations and tours in an old Sprinter van.

In August, during the Provence Landing celebrations, Santa Eckert-Cotta will remember her great-grandfather, General Jean Fèvre (1920-1945). The archives hold a page from Figaro commemorating his death and the deaths of his sons, Father Hubert Fèvre and Father Jean Fèvre, who also gave their lives for France. General Fèvre, who served in the Free French Forces, played a key role in the liberation of Toulon. Santa’s other ancestors served in the US Navy. “Most of them died in the Pacific,” noted her uncle John Michael Eckert. “We come from Washington with ancestors who immigrated from Austria, Spain, France, and Ireland.”

Santa’s Franco-American roots explain her ability to transition between different genres and reach for greater heights. The Eckerts, who have been Francophiles for generations, call Villefranche-sur-Mer their home port. This coastal town was once a naval base…
