Petro attached a photo of Palestinian children killed in the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, commenting: “Children of the genocide in Gaza that humanity must not forget. If we let this crime against humanity go unnoticed, our children will be the ones who will be bombed too.”
The Colombian president has previously criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he deserves an international arrest warrant because he refuses to “stop the genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry had previously announced that it had officially informed the Israeli ambassador in Bogota of the severing of diplomatic relations between Colombia and Israel.
Colombia’s president said in May that he would sever diplomatic relations with Israel over its actions in Gaza. “We will sever diplomatic relations with the state of Israel… because it has a government and a president with a penchant for genocide,” Petro told crowds in the capital, Bogota.
The devastating Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 100,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, who have reached hospitals, while more than 10,000 are still missing under the rubble resulting from the ongoing bombing throughout the Strip.
