American singer Duke Fakir, co-founder of the legendary soul band Four Tops, died of heart failure in Detroit at the age of 88, the New York Times reported, citing a statement from his family. Born Abdul Fakir, known as Duke Fakir, he is the last surviving original member of the Four Summits. The Motown Quartet’s biggest hits in the ’60s included pop classics such as “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” and “Baby I Need Your Loving.”
In 1990, four members, Duke Fakir, Levi Stubbs, Obi Benson and Lawrence Payton, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Following Fakir’s death, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released a statement on Instagram naming the Four Tops “one of the most powerful vocal groups of all time.”
Between 1997 and 2008, three of Fakir’s fellow singers died. He continues to tour and perform with other musicians until the end of 2023. Fakir’s family told the Detroit Free Press that he only officially retired from the music industry this year. The statement said they now mourn the loss of a pioneer, icon and music legend.
