Low pressure channels, in interaction with tropical waves number 12 and 13 over different regions of Mexico, in addition to an out-of-season frontal system on the northern border, among other phenomena, will cause intense rains in 11 states of the country, reported this Monday the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
Heavy rains, from 75 to 150 millimeters, will occur in regions of Chiapas, Coahuila, Colima, State of Mexico, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz, while there will be very heavy rains, from 50 to 75 millimeters, in areas of Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco and Tamaulipas.
In addition, there will be heavy rains, from 25 to 50 millimeters, in areas of Aguascalientes, Campeche, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Morelos, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tlaxcala, Yucatán and Zacatecas.
In addition, there will be intervals of showers, from 5 to 25 millimeters, in Baja California and Baja California Sur.
The rain forecast for Saturday could be accompanied by lightning, strong gusts of wind and hail.
The conditions will be generated, explained the SMN, by tropical waves numbers 12 and 13, in addition to low pressure channels extended over different regions of the Mexican Republic, a low pressure zone with probability of cyclonic development south of Guerrero and Michoacán.
In addition to the Mexican monsoon, an out-of-season frontal system that will extend near the country’s northern border, instability at high levels of the atmosphere and the entry of humidity from the Gulf of Mexico.
“The low pressure zone mentioned has a 10% probability of cyclonic development in the 48-hour and seven-day forecasts; this morning it was located approximately 605 kilometers south-southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero, and is slowly moving west-northwest,” the agency explained.
Winds with gusts of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour (km/h) and possible whirlwinds or tornadoes are also expected in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
In addition to gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour in Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Mexico City, Colima, Durango, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Puebla, Queretaro, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Yucatan and Zacatecas, as well as on the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero, and with possible dust storms in San Luis Potosi and Sonora.
“The more intense rainfall could cause landslides, an increase in river and stream levels, as well as overflows and flooding in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states,” said the Mexican meteorologist, while urging the population to heed its warnings and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.
