Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to “extreme fatigue”. The Slovenian Olympic Committee announced the news on Monday.

The 25-year-old Slovenian, who recently confidently won the Tour de France for a third time and previously dominated the Giro d’Italia, will be replaced by compatriot Domen Novak. At the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Pogacar won a bronze medal in the road race.

“Unfortunately, Tadej Pogacar has withdrawn due to extreme fatigue,” Slovenian Olympic team coach Uros Munn said in a statement. The Slovenians also had to lose Puri Primoz Roglic, the 2023 Tour de France champion, has withdrawn from the Tour de France due to an injury sustained in a fall. Tour of Denmark runner-up Jonas Vengergaard has also withdrawn from the Olympics in June.

Pogacar also recently expressed anger that his fiancée, Urska Zigart, the Slovenian national road race and individual time trial champion, was not nominated. It’s unclear whether his surprising withdrawal from the Olympics was related to this.

This year, Pogacar will also be one of the medal candidates for the road race on August 3 and the individual time trial on July 27. The 275 kilometers of the road race around the French capital should be more suitable for classics specialists such as world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands), Max Pedersen (Denmark) and Wout van Aert ( Belgium).
