Hello Kitty’s true identity revealed

Jill Cook, executive of Sanrio, the Japanese company that created the iconic Hello Kitty character, revealed that the well-known figure, which for decades has been identified as a charming kitten, does not actually represent that adorable feline.

Last Thursday, on NBC’s ‘Today Show’, which paid tribute to this popular children’s character who will celebrate her 50th anniversary next November, Cook clarified that Hello Kitty is actually “a girl who was born and raised in the suburbs of London.”

The director also explained that the girl has “a mom, a dad and a twin sister named Mimmy, who is also her best friend. She likes to bake cookies and make new friends.” She also explained that Hello Kitty “weighs the same as three apples and is the equivalent of five apples in size.” The television show recalled that the character has a cat named Charmmy Kitty and a boyfriend named Dear Daniel.

THE REACTION OF THE FOLLOWERS

In the comments of the YouTube video where the interview was posted, some of the character’s followers expressed their doubts about his newly revealed identity. “I don’t care what they say, that thing is a cat,” said one. “Exactly. How is it a girl if it looks like a cat? I mean, it has whiskers,” another user elaborated a little further in his response, to which another added: “and cat ears!”

“Question: If she’s not a ‘cat,’ why is she called ‘Kitty’ and why does she look like a cat?” another disgruntled follower asked. “So a girl with whiskers? How come she’s not a cat? Someone help me!” another netizen added. “So she’s a cat and identifies as human,” another joked, alluding to current trends in identity.
