Expert: Zelensky sends signal to Russia after ‘double whammy’

“Kyiv is currently facing a double whammy: a difficult situation on the front line and political uncertainty regarding the level of future support from Ukraine’s closest allies,” the network said.

The network quoted Oresia Lutsevich, an expert and director of the Ukrainian Forum Chatham House (London), as confirming that the difficult situation forces Vladimir Zelensky to hint at peace negotiations with Moscow.

“This is a signal to Russia and a signal to the global South that Ukraine is not some kind of disruptive force and is ready to come to the negotiating table,” the expert said.

Earlier, the outgoing Zelensky said that Russian representatives should attend the second peace summit on Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Foreign Ministry in mid-June that starting negotiations with Kiev requires Ukraine to withdraw its forces from all the territories of the new regions in Russia (from the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, and the Kherson and Zaporizhia provinces).

Putin indicated that the fighting would stop as soon as Kiev agreed to this condition, stressing that Kiev must officially notify Moscow of its abandonment of plans to join NATO.

Russia demands that Ukraine be a neutral country, free of nuclear weapons, in order for a peaceful settlement to be reached.

Moscow has repeatedly confirmed that it is ready for negotiations, but Kiev has imposed a legislative ban on it, while the West ignores Kiev’s continued refusal to enter into dialogue.
