In 2023, a scandalous embezzlement of more than 21 million Cuban pesos (CUP) hit the Artemisa Electric Company and involved the Base Business Unit (UEB) of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM).
The warehouse manager, taking advantage of his access to the Sinscont5 financial accounting system as chief accountant, manipulated the resource record, an action outside his official powers, reported the state-owned media El Artemiseño.
According to the information provided, the accused illegally accessed the inventory module, altering product descriptions to appropriate resources destined for the energy development of the ZEDM.
This fraud generated losses for the entity totaling 21,127,548.47 Cuban pesos (CUP).
The extraction of these resources was carried out with the complicity of three specialized electrical linemen from the Mariel UEB. To do so, they used vehicles assigned to their functions to transport the products and sell them on the informal market.
The official media outlet notes that this operation generated a “negative impact on the already weakened national energy system.”
Sanctions for the multimillion-dollar Mariel embezzlement
The lack of internal control over material and financial resources by the economic apparatus of the UEB of the ZEDM allowed these illegal acts to occur. As a result, six managers and employees who might have prevented these events were charged.
In total, 13 people were charged with crimes of falsifying banking and commercial documents, embezzlement, failure to protect the assets of economic entities, receiving stolen goods and theft.
In addition, it was announced that four of those involved are under provisional detention, while the case was submitted to the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Artemisa by the Prosecutor’s Office.
The requested penalties vary, with five of the defendants facing between eight and eighteen years of imprisonment, while six might receive sentences of correctional labor without confinement and two with confinement.
