According to the British news agency Reuters, many social media users said they would boycott the film, while a Hindu nationalist group called the scene a “severe attack on Hinduism”.

The film, which was released to much fanfare in India on Friday, has been rated by the Central Board of Film Certification as recommending parental guidance for viewers below 12 years of age.
The nationalist ‘Save Culture Save India Foundation’ has said in a statement that ‘this matter should be investigated immediately and those involved should be punished severely.’

A comment by government official Uday Mahurkar, the organization’s founder, condemning the film was also retweeted more than 3,600 times.
Local filmmakers’ body Universal Pictures India and the Board of Film Certification did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film stars Cillian Murphy as American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who oversaw the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.
Warner Bros. Discovery, which released the film in India, said on Monday that the film has grossed nearly 600 million Indian rupees ($7.33 million) since its release in India on Friday.
Indian cinema houses are relying on movies like Oppenheimer and Barbie to boost their revenue following online streaming services.
After several recent flops in Bollywood, filmmakers are avoiding going to theaters.
