6 people were killed in the Russian attacks in Ukraine, and the power supply was cut off in Kherson

At least five people were killed in the shelling and electricity was cut off in much of the city of Kherson.

The Russian attacks came a day following Ukraine’s air force destroyed a Russian amphibious ship in the Black Sea near annexed Crimea, as both sides seek to make significant progress in their nearly two-year war.

According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihori Klymenko, during the night, Kremlin forces began an intensive bombardment of the Kherson region with artillery and drones. At that time, regarding 140 civilians were waiting for the train in the capital of the region of the same name. During the shooting, one policeman was killed, two civilians and two policemen were injured.

More than 100 people who were waiting for a train at the time of the attack arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday morning, Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsya said.

During the attack, residential areas and a shopping center were damaged in the Kherson region and its capital, and electricity networks were also damaged, so during the cold weather, regarding 70 percent of households in Kherson were left without electricity, said Oleksandr Prokudin, governor of the region.

He said that it is not yet possible to determine when the power supply may be restored.

Last winter, Russian forces also targeted energy infrastructure in an attempt to break Ukrainian resolve.

In Odesa, another large city in southern Ukraine, a Russian drone attack killed two people and wounded three others, including a 17-year-old teenager, the region’s governor, Oleh Kiper, said.

Ukraine’s air force said it destroyed 32 of the 46 drones launched by Russia overnight.

But the Western assessment says that Russia’s capture of a city in eastern Ukraine this week will prevent it from achieving greater gains on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s top military commander, Valery Zaluzhn, said on Tuesday that his forces had withdrawn to the outskirts of Marinka, regarding 20 km west of Donetsk, the largest city in Russian-controlled territory.

V. Zaluzhnas said that Ukrainian soldiers controlled Marjinka for almost two years, but the Russians, according to him, demolished it street by street, house by house.

However, according to the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), it is unlikely that Russian forces will advance rapidly from Marjinka.

However, the center noted that “local Russian offensive operations are still putting pressure on Ukrainian forces in many areas of the frontline in eastern Ukraine.”
