“Because of you, every voter in this country will have an equal opportunity to vote for our candidates, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be re-elected because of you,” Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harris said at a rally with supporters on Friday.
Meanwhile, Biden himself had issued a statement earlier that day saying he planned to resume campaigning next week, and is now isolating at his rural Delaware residence following being diagnosed with the coronavirus a few days ago.
Amid growing domestic criticism of Biden’s disastrous debate performance with Donald Trump, US politicians and journalists say the current US president might be replaced by another candidate, with Vice President Kamala Harris considered the most likely alternative.
Despite calls from many Democrats in Congress and Democratic donors, Biden says he has no plans to drop out of the presidential race. At the same time, he has said Harris is fully prepared to become president if he is unable to complete his full second term.
In theory, the party will have a chance to nominate another candidate at the convention in August, but in practice it will be difficult to remove the winning president from the race unless he himself declines to participate. At the same time, Biden says he intends to stay in the race and go all the way, believing that there are no better candidates than him.
The second debate between Biden and Trump is scheduled for September 10. The US presidential election will be held on November 5.
