For several hours on Saturday, July 20, the country’s banking system reported problems with the instant transfer system, which were caused by a software update, according to official sources who confirmed that operations have already returned to normal.
“We inform you that the Clearing House System (ACH) is in the process of being updated, so immediate and deferred transfers are temporarily out of service,” wrote one of the banking agencies to its users.
Fernando Samayoa Delgado, president of the Guatemalan Banking Association (ABG), confirmed that the problems were due to the installation of new Montran software and reiterated that there is no relation to the Microsoft failures.
“Unfortunately, today the ACH system, both immediate and the one that operates 24 hours later, had some rejections and problems that were detected when a new program from the Montran provider was installed that operates the CAH’s interbank transactions with the banking system,” said Samayoa.
He added that when the problem was detected that duplicated some transactions, the system stopped offering the service for security reasons; he also reiterated that the provider sent corrective actions on two occasions, but they did not work and it was not until 5 pm that “we had the final correction installed and working.”
At around 5 p.m. the problem was resolved.
He said that the problem this Saturday is not related to the problem that occurred last Friday due to the crash of Microsoft servers. “It was just a bad coincidence, all these programs have updates and for some reason this one also had an update with some internal programming problem,” he explained.
For this reason, he pointed out that the error has already been solved and “we apologize to the clients and hope that they can now normalize their transactions, because the entire banking system is now working on the transactions.”
“Unfortunately, this fact may have been exaggerated given the situation that users in other activities suffered yesterday – Friday – with this problem that Microsoft suffered, but in this situation it has absolutely nothing to do with that and everything is back to normal. Today, banks are already operating correctly, the system is already up and running and it was up in a matter of hours.”
