WITH the theme “Express with Sasirangan”, the Meratus Geopark Management Agency presents the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival (MGGCC) event on 20–21 August 2024. This grand event as a collaborative medium will involve various entities to present and echo the rich values of the geological, biological and cultural heritage of the Meratus Geopark in a series of events to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Province of South Kalimantan.
The variety of arts and culture from the Banjar and Dayak tribes will amaze many eyes. In this series of events, there will also be a MURI record-breaking event with the longest Sasirangan stretch, which is 5.7 km long.
“The breaking of this Muri Record was initiated by the Chairperson of the South Kalimantan Provincial Dekranasda, Mrs. Hj. Raudatul Jannah S.KM., M.Kes, and is a form of appreciation and exposure of collaboration in preserving the cultural heritage of the Meratus Geopark, namely the Sasirangan Cloth which has received recognition of the Geographical Indication Rights of South Kalimantan from the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights on June 7, 2024,” said Hanifah Dwi Nirwana as the Daily Chairperson of the Meratus Geopark Management Agency.
The sasirangan cloth will later be stretched in the South Kalimantan Provincial Government Office Area in Banjarbaru and will form the Kelayangan dandang or Layang-layang dandang formation, a traditional game of the Banjar community which is still played today and is often carried out in the form of the Kelayangan Dandang Festival event.
In the series of Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival (MGGCC) events, an expo will also be held which will be filled by various elements of society and SKPD in the South Kalimantan Provincial Government. Where in this expo will present various kinds of UMKM products produced by Expo participants, such as UMKM partnership geopark meratus who present their geoproducts, as well as culinary booths with traditional dishes of the Banjar and Dayak people.
In addition, there will also be sponsorship booths that will present superior products from their fostered MSMEs. And to strengthen the exposure of the echo of geopark management to the wider community, MGGCC will also display the implementation of geopark wealth management in the fields of conservation, education and local community economic development, through geoproducts and geotourism owned by geoparks in Indonesia and have entered the UNESCO Global Geopark network.

“We hope that by implementing the expo in the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival series, we can support inclusive and sustainable economic development through the development of the creative economy and sustainable tourism. We introduce more massively the products produced by Banua’s MSMEs and can be the initial milestone in making Banua’s MSMEs move up a class,” added Hanifah who is also the chairman of the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival.
To add to the excitement of the series of events, in this event there will also be held various competitions such as following movie event making competitions, children’s coloring competitions and other interesting competitions. And towards the peak of the treat, at the closing of this event will present a spectacular Colossal Dance and the appearance of the National Legend Band, Padi Reborn.
This national band, fronted by Fadly, Piyu, Rindra, Yoyo and Arie, will perform their hit songs packaged in a Traditional Futuristic stage concept.
No less interesting in the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival 2024 show, there will also be a fireworks party as the closing of the entire series of events. “We hope that this event can become an annual event that is awaited by the people of South Kalimantan, as well as an event that can attract people from outside to come to South Kalimantan,” added Hanifah closing the discussion regarding the Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival 2024.
