G. Landsbergis hopes to avoid past grievances by working with D. Tusk’s Government

“I believe that we will resist this in our cooperation and will not look back on the past.” We will look to the future, what we have to do”, G. Landsbergis said in an interview with BNS on Wednesday.

D. Tusk, who was sworn in on Wednesday, already headed the Polish government in 2007-2014, but at that time bilateral relations were overshadowed by disagreements over the investments of the Polish oil concern “Orlen” and the situation of the Polish national minority.

Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski, who became the head of diplomacy in the new D. Tusk Government, was very categorical towards Lithuania.

He has said that he will not come to Lithuania until the issues of national minorities are resolved in the country.

In 2017, in fragments of a secretly recorded conversation made public by the Polish media, R. Sikorskis told the manager of “Orlen” Jacek Krawiecs that he wanted to “educate Lithuanians”.

In an interview full of obscene words, the former head of Polish diplomacy called Lithuania a “small country”. It was previously announced that R. Sikorski’s conversations were secretly recorded during private meetings in Warsaw restaurants in 2013 and 2014.

“I want to educate Lithuanians so that they don’t think that shitting on Poland won’t cost anything,” R. Sikorskis was quoted as saying.

G. Landsbergis told BNS on Wednesday that his relationship with R. Sikorski is excellent.

“We have communicated several times with the then member of the European Parliament R. Sikorskis, our relations are really excellent,” said the minister.

“I think, first of all, they are based on the same geopolitical perception and risks for both of our countries,” he added.

The coalition led by D. Tusk replaced the right-wing party “Law and Justice” (PiS) in the Polish government.
