INDONESIA strongly condemns the resolution adopted by the Israeli parliament on Thursday (18/7). The resolution rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state. Indonesia believes that the resolution significantly weakens the two-state solution.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the resolution adopted by the Israeli parliament which rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state and clearly weakens the two-state solution,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on its account. X, Thursday (17/7).

The ministry stressed that the two-state solution remains the only path to peace in Palestine and the region.

“Indonesia remains committed to encouraging its implementation,” the statement stressed.

The Knesset resolution was a hardening of an earlier position adopted earlier this year, which rejected the idea that a Palestinian state might be declared unilaterally.

In 2009, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would accept a demilitarized Palestinian state as long as it recognized Israel. Negotiations fell apart and, in recent years, Netanyahu and the Israeli public have drifted away from supporting two states, a sentiment that has strengthened since October 7.

Netanyahu is due to visit Washington next week. The Biden administration is expected to push for a two-state solution as a way to bring Arab states into the rebuilding of Gaza and normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. (P-5)
