Taiwan’s lawmakers pushed and shoved each other in parliament on Friday in a bitter dispute over reforms, days before President-elect Lai Ching-te takes office without a legislative majority.

Even before the votes began, some MPs were shouting and pushing each other out of the chamber, before the action moved to parliament itself.

In chaotic scenes, MPs swarmed around the Speaker of the House’s office. Some were jumping over tables and dragging colleagues to the floor. Although calm soon returned, there were further clashes in the followingnoon.

Lai Ching-te, who is due to be sworn in on Monday, won the election in January, but his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lost its majority in parliament.

The main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has more seats than the DPP, but not enough to form a majority on its own, so it works with the small Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) to promote their common ideas.

The opposition wants parliament to have more control over the government, including a controversial proposal to criminalize officials deemed to make false statements in parliament.
