Straight personal attack on the Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendiaswith provocative references to Cyprus and the 1974 invasion, unleashes the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
The occasion was the statements of Mr. Dendias during his recent visit to Cyprus for the 50th anniversary of Attila’s invasion. Among other things, the Minister of Defense had spoken from Nicosia “regarding the last divided city, once morest the principles of International Law, once morest the principles of the Charter of the United Nations”, while he made reference to the “black anniversary of the Juntist coup in Cyprus, of an ethnic coup that opened the backdoor to the lurking invader,” as he said.
In his announcement, the Ministry of Defense of Turkey characterizes the statements of the Greek Minister of Defense as “low-level, false and slanderous”, while continuing in provocative tones, he states that “the Turkish army took action in accordance with Turkey’s right to guarantee and saved the Turkish Cypriot people (…) from an attempted genocide”.
He also attributes to Mr. Dendias “attempts to undermine the common position of the leaders of the two countries, which aims to promote Turkey-Greece relations in a constructive way”, as well as “attempts to make a political career by creating disturbances between the Turkish and of the Greek people”.

“We strongly condemn the low-level, false and slanderous statement of the Greek Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, aimed at the Turkish Cypriots and the heroic Turkish army.
The heroic Turkish army acted in accordance with Turkey’s right of guarantee arising from international agreements and saved the Turkish Cypriot people, who were subjected to all kinds of persecution by the Greek Cypriot side between 1963 and 1974, from attempted genocide.
Thanks to the courage and presence of the Turkish army, no blood has been shed in Cyprus since 1974, Greece’s junta oppression of the Greek Cypriot people has been eliminated and the military regime in Greece has been overthrown and a return to democracy has been made possible.
The Turkish Army will be the guarantor of peace and tranquility in Cyprus in the future, as it was in the past and in the present.
We call on the Greek Minister of Defense to abandon his efforts to undermine the joint position of the leaders of the two countries, which aims to promote Turkey-Greece relations in a constructive way. The efforts of Mr. Dendias to make a political career by creating riots between the Turkish and Greek people will not bring any results.”
