The New York Times reported, citing several people close to the Democrat, that the 81-year-old appears to be gradually accepting that he may have to give up his election campaign.
He has begun “to come to terms with the idea that he may not be able to win in November and will have to drop out of the race to meet the growing demands of many concerned members of his party,” the newspaper wrote. Biden has not yet made a decision, however. Publicly, the president has so far rigorously rejected all calls from his own party for him to withdraw. His campaign team also insists that Biden has no intention of giving up. Recently, however, the pressure on him within the party has increased enormously.
An exit is only a matter of time. “I know for a fact that he is actually thinking regarding it,” said a person familiar with the matter who wished to remain anonymous. “He is thinking regarding it very seriously.” Another insider with the Democrats said that Biden, who is currently suffering from corona, had recognized the signs of the times: “It feels like it is a question of … when, not if.” One of the people close to Biden told the New York Times that it would not be a surprise if Biden soon announced his withdrawal and proposed his deputy Kamala Harris as his presidential candidate for the November election. An exit is only a matter of time.
Pelosi believes Biden will soon withdraw
The Washington Post, in turn, reported, citing three congressmen, that Biden confidante and former Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi had told several party colleagues in parliament that she believed that Biden might soon be persuaded to withdraw from the presidential race. She also had serious doubts that he might win the election in November once morest Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Pelosi’s office did not initially respond to inquiries.
Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Cedric Richmond, told MSNBC that the reporting was wrong. The president had said he was running. Quentin Fulks, also deputy campaign manager, had previously made a similar statement. The president is not undecided and has made his decision, he said. Biden is running. The election campaign is moving forward.
Internal party rebellion
Biden is facing a rebellion within his party because of his advanced age and doubts regarding his mental state. Since a disastrous performance in a televised debate once morest Trump at the end of June, several Democratic lawmakers have openly called on him to drop out of the presidential race. Many others have publicly expressed great concern regarding his election chances.
Recently, prominent Democrats have also come forward with similar statements. And according to media reports, behind the scenes, the very first ranks of the party are now also urging Biden to withdraw.
Due to a coronavirus infection, Biden is currently not attending any public events. He is isolating himself in his private home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
