Saudi Arabia appointed its ambassador to Palestine for the first time

Saudi Arabia has appointed its first ambassador to the Palestinian Authority. Saudi Arabia’s ambassador Nayef bin Bandar al-Sudairi reached the Palestinian Authority on a two-day visit from Jordan and presented his diplomatic credentials to President Mahmoud Abbas, which was accepted.

It should be remembered that Saudi Ambassador Nayef Bin Bandar Al-Sudairi, who was the Saudi Ambassador to Jordan, was appointed as the Non-Resident Special Envoy for Palestine and Consul General in Jerusalem last year.

After presenting the credentials, now Saudi Ambassador Nayef bin Bandar Al-Sudairi will look following the diplomatic affairs of Jordan as well as Palestine, but his office will be in Jordan for now.

The main reason for which was the strong reaction from Israel who refused to give the Saudi ambassador an office in Jerusalem, saying that the Saudi ambassador can come to meet the Palestinian representatives but cannot build an office.

It should be noted that Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital, which was confirmed by the United States in 2017 and recognized by many countries, but the major world powers did not take it into account and still consider Jerusalem controversial.

The appointment of the Saudi ambassador to the Palestinian Authority comes at a time when the United States is mediating the restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Four years ago, the United States played the role of mediator and restored the diplomatic and commercial relations of many Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, with Israel.
