A new technology to destroy drones, which will shoot down swarms of enemy drones, is being developed by Britain.

The weapon system, unveiled last night by the British Ministry of Defense, will be used in the coming years by the country’s armed forces to neutralize many drones in one shot, giving them an “operational advantage”.

The weapon will emit radio waves to disrupt drones or destroy land, air and sea threats up to a kilometer away – although further development of the technology is expected to extend its range. The Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW), as it is currently called, will be able to detect, track and shoot down enemy drones, and can be mounted on various military vehicles and use mobile energy sources to produce pulses of radio frequency energy .

According to iefimerida, this is a cheaper alternative to traditional air defense systems, cheaper than the Dragon Fire, another British laser weapon that shoots down drones and missiles at a cost of £10 per shot, but is expected to be ready for use by the country’s armed forces until 2027 at the latest.

The new anti-drone technology will be field tested by soldiers this summer and is being developed by a joint team from the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defense Equipment & Support (DE&S).
