Argentina reached its 16th Copa América and breaks the tie with Uruguay to become the biggest continental winner

Sports.- The selection of Argentina is a two-time Copa America champion following beating Colombia 1-0 in extra time at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, United States.

After a delay of more than an hour due to problems with fans getting into the stadium, the game was able to take place with all the stars of each team on the field.

In the first 45 minutes, the ball was alternated in possession, with few scoring opportunities and a slight dominance by the Colombian team but without finding the opponent’s goal.

The second half saw more action in the penalty areas, with dangerous chances at both goals, but neither team was able to break the tie, so the match went into extra time.

Notably Lionel Messi had to leave the match in the 65th minute due to an ankle injury.

In extra time Colombia had several approaches, but Argentina took advantage of a Colombian distraction to score, through Lautaro Martinezthe championship goal in the 112th minute.

In this way, the Albiceleste reached its 16th Copa América and breaks the tie with Uruguay to become the biggest continental winner.

Lionel Scaloni’s team also won their fourth consecutive trophy, a streak that began with the 2021 Copa América, the Finalissima once morest Italy in 2022, the 2022 Qatar World Cup and now the 2024 Copa América.

Conmebol honored Argentines Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez with the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper of the tournament and Lautaro Martínez was the top scorer with 5 goals; while Colombian James Rodríguez won the MVP award of the 2024 Copa América.

Pending official confirmation, the Finalissima between Argentina and Spain is expected to take place in 2025.
