Thomas Müller retires from the German national team

“After almost fourteen years and 131 international matches, I have decided to end my career in the German national team,” announced Thomas Müller, the 34-year-old striker of Bayern Munich, in a video published on his Instagram page. “Hello!” – in the video, Müller, the world champion in 2014, said goodbye to his teammates and fans, whom he thanked for the past years.

Müller made his debut as a member of the German national team in 2010, in a match once morest Argentina. Already that year, he became a World Cup bronze medalist, and in 2014, he and Nationalelf won the World Cup in Brazil. He played in a total of 131 matches in the national team, of which he scored 45 times. At this year’s European Championship, he played only twice: in the group match once morest the Scots and in the quarter-final once morest Spain, the latter being his last match for the national team.

At this year’s soccer European Championship, the German national team, among other things, defeated the Hungarians 2-0 and advanced to the elimination stage as the first place in Group A. After a 2-0 victory once morest the Danes, the Spaniards eliminated the Germans playing at home in the quarter-finals: Julian Nagelsmann’s team lost 2-1 to the Spaniards, who have since won the European Championship, following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
