Sales of used cars in Lithuania are several times higher than new ones, so the current sales in the world topi in the future, it will inevitably shape the supply of used vehicles in our country. Especially considering the trends in the markets of Western European countries.

A clear market champion

“Today, the global car market has a clear champion. “Tesla Model Y” took the first place in terms of sales last year, and it maintained its attractiveness to buyers and its leading position in the world even in the first half of this year”, says car market expert Gediminas Dijokas, evaluating the public data of the US company “JATO Dynamics”.

The company that collects and analyzes data on the global car market presents a list of the models that were sold the most in the world in 2023. In total, the list of 25 models included 13 models of Japanese manufacturers, 5 – American, 3 – Chinese, 2 models each from South Korea and Europe. All three cars from China were BYD models.

Last year, two models crossed the threshold of one million cars sold – Tesla Model Y (1.22 million) and Toyota RAV4/Wildlander (1.07 million). Honda CR-V/Breeze (846 thousand), Toyota Corolla/Levin sedan (803 thousand), Toyota Corolla Cross/Frontlander (715 thousand) lined up below. Toyota Camry (650 thousand), Ford F-150 (623 thousand), Toyota Hillux (605 thousand), Nissan Sentra/Sylphy (534 thousand), Tesla Model 3″ (508 thousand).

G. Dijokas, who manages the car trading platform “Caramba.lt”, notices that there are no Volkswagen or Škoda models loved by Lithuanians in the world’s ten most popular models, but there are Toyota models, and this brand occupies a leading position in our country.

“In the past, Toyota also reigned at the top of the world market until it was pushed out by Tesla.” The results of the 2024 markets show that Tesla Model Y maintains its momentum and continues to dominate the world in terms of sales this year, G. Dijokas observes. By the way, this model was also the best-selling in Europe last year. A unique case, because the American machine for the first time on our continent surpassed European brands and local manufacturers”.

SUVs dominate

The top five most popular new cars in Europe looked like this: Tesla Model Y, Renault Clio, Dacia Sandero, Volkswagen T-Roc, and Peugeot 208.

On the other hand, the head of Caramba.lt, G. Dijokas, admits that the demand for electric vehicles is no longer growing as fast as before, while gasoline-powered vehicles are regaining their appeal – the results of these sales in the world have become as good as before “Covid-19”. pandemic. Currently, new cars with gasoline engines target two-thirds of the market. “Of course, at the same time, the market share of diesel cars continues to shrink both globally and in Europe. However, trends in Europe show that instead of diesels, people choose gasoline-powered vehicles instead of electric ones,” adds G. Dijokas.

In his opinion, the focus on electric cars that prevailed for some time did not create a strong enough impulse and breakthrough in the used car market. According to the interviewee, infrastructure and access to charging stations is still a headache for people driving both pure EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

Summarizing the data of JATO Dynamics, G. Dijokas states that drivers in the world currently feel a strong liking for SUV class cars, urban off-road vehicles. Last year, SUV models reached a new sales record in the world – a total of 36.72 million of them were sold. units, and their market share was the highest in history.
