- Since the presidential order came into effect, authorities have also expelled more than 50,000 foreigners.
The release of migrants who recently entered the United States illegally has decreased by 70% since the border restrictions imposed by the Administration of President Joe Biden were implemented, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported on Tuesday, July 16.
As part of measures to discourage the irregular entry of migrants across the border, asylum seekers have been ordered to be detained while they seek approval of their cases.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has expanded the number of beds in its network of ICE detention centers, allowing authorities to detain migrants facing removal proceedings
On June 5, the Biden administration imposed a series of changes at the border to prevent – with a few exceptions – most people who cross into the country without authorization from requesting asylum.
The DHS reported on Tuesday that in the six weeks that the restrictions have been in place, the number of migrant detentions has been reduced by 50%, the lowest numbers recorded under the Democratic administration.
More than 50 thousand migrants expelled
Since the presidential order went into effect, ICE has removed more than 50,000 aliens to more than 100 countries.
In addition, the percentage of foreigners expelled or returned directly by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has doubled.
CBP regularly turns migrants over to ICE custody for surveillance and deportation when ordered by a judge.
DHS has also doubled the percentage of migrants processed through expedited removal while in CBP or ICE custody over the past six weeks.
Expedited removal processing was already at record levels before the order went into effect.
DHS has expelled or returned more than 740,000 people since May 2023, when Title 42, which allowed for the immediate removal of migrants at the border for health reasons, was discontinued.
