THE increasing unemployment rate that is currently a phenomenon throughout the world is not only caused by a lack of jobs, but is also influenced by the skills gap. Rapid and widespread digitalization is changing the nature of job needs.
That is why digital literacy is important to be implemented by everyone to enter the world of work. Currently, employees need digital literacy to enter several new technologies and follow the very rapid development of technology.
However, currently the availability of Human Resources is relatively low when compared to the needs of the job market that requires digital literacy. Many companies are now having difficulty finding employees with the criteria of digitally literate HR. This proves that the job market is actually still wide open, but HR that matches the job market is still minimal.
Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir predicted that by 2030 there will be nine types of jobs lost. This follows the rapid digitalization of almost all sectors, which not only presents opportunities but also has effects.
To remind the public of this phenomenon, as well as to prevent a skills gap, the Ministry of Communication and Information held a virtual discussion, Obral-obrol Literasi Digital (OOTD) with the title “Recognize and Overcome the Skill Gap” on Friday, July 12, 2024.
According to Santi Indra Astuti, a member of the Digital Literacy Activists Network who was a speaker in the OOTD, skill gaps are actually common when there is a technological development. Moreover, if the technology has become massive and has become a culture in people’s lives.

The emergence of new technology, he continued, will need to be facilitated by new workers. This gap must also be balanced by HR capabilities so that there is no skill gap.
“Employment opportunities can be a blessing, but they can also be a disaster when we cannot take advantage of them,” said Santi.
Skill gaps can also be detrimental to companies, which of course can have an impact on the economy and state revenue. Because, if HR does not master existing technology, the company’s productivity and efficiency will clearly decrease.

“What is certain is that productivity and efficiency decline when what should be a skill that must be mastered to complete the work is not mastered by the human resources. Of course, productivity and efficiency decline,” said Ary Wibowo, a member of the SIP Institute & Indonesia Membangun Pemimpin.
Not only holding online discussions, Kominfo also opens up opportunities for the public to hone their digitalization skills by creating a number of training programs. These opportunities are certainly open to the general public, students, entrepreneurs and workers.
