DRC-Masisi: at least three dead in Bweremana following the explosion of a shell fired from the area controlled by the M23

At least three dead and one injured were recorded during the explosion of a shell this Monday, July 15, in Bweremana, on the Sake-Minova road, in the territory of Masisi (North Kivu). According to the president of the local civil society, the shot came from the Kashingamutwe and Ndumba hills controlled by the M23. The latter were targeting positions of the FARDC and Wazalendo fighters. This new incident occurs in the middle of the humanitarian truce in force since July 4 at the request of the United States.

“Very early in the morning around 5am, we were surprised by detonations of heavy and light weapons on all the hills occupied by our FARDC elements and the Wazalendo. The M23 had just violated the humanitarian truce that had been declared. The bomb dropped by the M23 caused the loss of life of three children and another was injured. We deplore the loss of these children. Among them, there are two boys, one aged 17 and the other four, as well as a five-year-old girl. The other injured girl is five years old. Among the deceased children, two are from the same family and the other is from another neighbouring family. The explosion of the bomb surprised them at home,” Flory Musanganya, president of the civil society of Bweremana, told ACTUALITE.CD.

He also calls for humanitarian assistance for war displaced persons who are going through difficult times in Bweremana and elsewhere.

“In Bweremana, the population is there, displaced people are still there. A humanitarian truce has been declared but so far, the displaced people have not received anything in terms of assistance on this axis. We wonder why the Sake-Bweremana section is not open while the Sake-Masisi center, Sake-Ngungu, Sake-Mweso axes, passing through Kitshanga are operational and even Goma-Rutshuru, except for the small section here of less than 20 km. We ask the authorities to reopen this axis, even within the framework of the humanitarian corridor,” he added.

A humanitarian truce has been declared on all lines of combat in the territories of Lubero, Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo. The measure agreed to by Kinshasa and Kigali, at the request of the United States of America, aims to allow the return of displaced persons to their places of origin as well as easy access for humanitarians to assist the displaced persons. Several hundred displaced persons from towns such as Kirumba, Kanyabayonga and Kibirizi, in the northern part of the province of North Kivu have even seen fit to return to their places despite the occupation of their entities by the M23 coalition.
