A ‘hot’ start to the week for Italy. Today and tomorrow, July 15 and 16, the alert will be maximum in 12 cities, marked with a red dot (level 3, the maximum) in the bulletin on heat waves from the Ministry of Health. On Wednesday, July 17, the cities ‘in red’ will increase to 13. Of the 27 provincial capitals monitored by the ministry, today and tomorrow Ancona, Bologna, Campobasso, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti, Rome, Trieste and Viterbo will be on the red dot. Palermo will be added on Wednesday, the hottest day of this first half of the week. The level 3 alert, the Ministry of Health reminds us, indicates “emergency conditions (heat wave) with possible negative effects on the health of healthy and active people, and not only on risk subgroups such as the elderly, very young children and people with chronic diseases”. These more fragile groups are instead those affected by alert level 2, the orange dot, which marks Palermo today and tomorrow, Turin tomorrow, Bolzano tomorrow and Wednesday, Bari on Wednesday.
Italy is therefore preparing for a new heat wave. The third week of July just begun, in fact, does not see substantial variations compared to the weather evolution of the last week. After the cool infiltrations of the weekend, in particular for the northern regions, the African promontory will return to push on the central Mediterranean with the very hot air that from North Africa will flow into Italy. Therefore, mostly stable weather conditions are expected in the next few days except for some followingnoon thunderstorms in the Alps and, very locally, on the reliefs of the Apennines. Temperatures will be above average even by 6-8 degrees with maximum values between +35 and +40 degrees over a good part of the Peninsula, locally above in the internal areas of the Center-South. According to the Italian Weather Center at least until the weekend there will be no changes in direction, perhaps just a slight drop in temperature by the end of the week.
