“It was unacceptable, and it should never happen once more,” she told ABC News.
Cheatle said she was shocked and concerned when she first learned of the shooting, both for Trump and for the Secret Service agents who responded.
“This is clearly not a situation that anyone would ever want to happen in their career as a Secret Service agent,” she said.
As head of the agency, Cheatle said she is responsible for investigating what went wrong and making sure something similar doesn’t happen once more.
“The responsibility lies with me, as the director of the Secret Service, and I have to make sure that we conduct a review and that we provide the necessary resources for our employees,” she continued.
Cheatle responded to reports that the suspect was seen and identified as a possible suspect before he opened fire, saying it was a very short period of time between then and the shooting.
“I don’t have all the details yet, but it took a very short time,” she added. “It took a very short time to find that person, to find him, to identify him, and finally to eliminate him, and that makes it very difficult.”
Chettle explained that local authorities were tasked with securing the building where the shooter opened fire before he was killed by a Secret Service sniper, and confirmed that local police were inside the building while the shooter was on the roof.
In the days following the attack, Cheatle and the Secret Service faced increasing scrutiny for their failure to prevent the incident, and even calls from some to resign.
The director of the US Secret Service is expected to testify before the Republican-led House Oversight Committee on Monday, July 22.
It is noteworthy that Donald Trump was subjected to an assassination attempt while he was speaking to supporters as part of his election campaign in Pennsylvania, last Saturday.
The accident resulted in the death of one person and the injury of others, in addition to a minor injury to Trump, who was transferred to the hospital as a result.
The US Secret Service said it killed the shooter, while the FBI identified the Trump shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
