On June 28, a magnitude 7 earthquake hit four districts in the Arequipa region in southern PeruAlthough there were no fatalities, the Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in these areas due to the damage caused to homes, roads and other infrastructure.
The decree establishing the measure was published in the official newspaper El Peruano and affects the districts of Acarí, Atiquipa, Jaquí and Yauca, which are located in the province of Caravalí in Arequipa.
Peru declares emergency
The state of emergency will be extended for 60 days in order to implement the “exceptional, immediate and necessary response and recovery measures” required following the earthquake.
In addition, a list of goods that will be considered as donations is established. This list will include medical supplies, food and drinks, clothing, cleaning and hygiene products, machinery and equipment, electric generators, fuel, construction materials, among others.
According to Indeci, the Arequipa region has experienced more than thirty followingshocks of the magnitude 7 earthquake. The most recent, of magnitude 6, occurred during the early hours of last Friday, and no damage to people or property has been reported.
The earthquakes recorded had magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 6.4 and occurred at an average depth of 29 kilometers off the coast of Arequipa, according to the Civil Defense.
The country of Peru is located in a geographical area called the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is responsible for more than 80% of the earthquakes that occur around the world.
In August 2007, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal city of Pisco and the southern region of Ica, killing more than 500 people and causing millions of dollars in damage to infrastructure and homes. This was the last devastating earthquake to hit the country.
