Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced a new ministerial formation in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
The new ministerial formation includes the appointment of his son, Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid, as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. This makes him the second Minister of Defense in the history of the Emirates, succeeding his father, who held the defense portfolio since the founding of the union in 1971.
Dubai’s ruler and UAE Vice President Mohammed bin Rashid said in a post on the X platform: “After consulting with my brother Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, President of the State… and in continuation of the ongoing development in the structure of the UAE government… we announce today a new ministerial formation in the country as follows: Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum joins the UAE government as Deputy Prime Minister and is appointed Minister of Defense in the UAE.”
He continued, saying: “We have great confidence that he will be a great addition to the UAE government… and a major contributor to shaping the future of the UAE.”

Among the other prominent ministerial appointments announced by Mohammed bin Rashid is the appointment of Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Deputy Prime Minister in addition to his duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
It was also announced that the Education, Human Resources and Community Development Council in the UAE will be reconstituted, with Abdullah bin Zayed serving as Chairman and Mariam bint Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Vice-Chairman. The Ministry of Community Development will be included under the council’s umbrella.
According to the ruler of Dubai’s posts on the X platform, the new government appointments also include Alia Abdullah Al Mazrouei as Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Sarah Al Amiri as Minister of Education, and Abdul Rahman Al Awar as Acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in addition to his current duties as Minister of Emiratisation and Human Resources in the federal government.

The new Minister of Defense, Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (41 years old), is the second son of the ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum. His lineage goes back to the “Al Bu Falasa” tribe, which is considered one of the branches of the “Bani Yas” tribe.
According to his biography,Sheikh Hamdan was born on November 14, 1982. He received his primary and secondary education at Rashid Private School in Dubai before heading to Britain to complete his studies. He graduated in 2001 from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
In addition to his military studies, Hamdan bin Mohammed has taken several specialized economic training courses at the London School of Economics and the Dubai School of Government.
He assumed his first official position in 2006 as Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, which is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategic development plans in the emirate.
Hamdan became Dubai’s Crown Prince on February 1, 2008, and “began to play a more comprehensive role in achieving the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, by assuming responsibility for the most important key files in the emirate,” according to his biography.
