Peru’s Supreme Court on Friday upheld the seizure of three Rolex watches and a diamond bangle bracelet requested by prosecutors in the investigation into President Dina Boluarte in a case of alleged illicit enrichment.
The Judiciary confirmed, on its social media account X, that the decision was adopted by the Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, following declaring unfounded an appeal by the also investigated Wilfredo Oscorima, current regional governor of Ayacucho.
According to Boluarte, Oscorima lent her the jewelry to wear at official events and trips because he is a very close friend of hers.
However, Oscorima also received a large transfer of funds to his region, following visiting Boluarte at the Government Palace on the occasion of his birthday and when he is believed to have given him the jewels.
Measure
The Supreme Court concluded that the measure was “proportionate, appropriate, necessary and urgent” to safeguard the purposes of the process, the judicial source added.
He said the assets were seized during an exhibition proceeding held at the Public Prosecutor’s Office on April 10.
Initially, Boluarte said that the jewels revealed in a newspaper report were fine fantasy, but later pointed out that they were a loan from his ‘wayki’ (friend in Quechua) Oscorima, who usually wears such luxury items and has also been prosecuted for alleged corruption in his past public positions.
