Santa Fe (USA), Jul 12 (EFE).- The US courts on Friday dismissed the case once morest Alec Baldwin for involuntary manslaughter during the filming of the movie ‘Rust’ following the actor’s defense argued that crucial evidence for his case had been hidden during the trial.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said the state had failed in its duty to “disclose critical evidence to the defendant” and that this violation had caused an “unnecessary” and “incurable” delay to the trial, so the only way to repair the error was the dismissal of the case.
Upon hearing the decision, Baldwin broke down in tears.as was his wife, Hilaria, and once Marlowe Sommer’s statement was over, the ’30 Rock’ actor was comforted by his wife and his siblings Stephen and Beth, who accompanied him throughout the week.
The interpreter left the court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, accompanied by his family and without making any statements to the press who were waiting for him at the exit.
Prosecutor Kari Morrissey said she respected the judge’s decision, even though she did not agree with it.
Baldwin, 66, was facing 18 months in prison on a manslaughter charge in the on-set death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021.
The actor was rehearsing a scene in which he was holding a Colt .45 revolver when a live round went off, killing Hutchins. Live bullets are banned from the sets.
At a hearing on Friday, his attorney, Alex Spiro, filed a motion accusing the prosecution of withholding key evidence that might have implicated the prop supplier for the production of “Rust,” Seth Kenney.
In its opening arguments, the defense argued that the state had focused its investigation on indicting Baldwin before pointing to potential culprits such as the supplier.
