Police stress, according to the BBC, that officers received a report at 11:57 (local time) on Wednesday July 11 regarding a man with a suitcase acting suspiciously on the bridge. The police arrived at the bridge within 10 minutes of the report, however the man had left the area and left the suitcase behind, while a second suitcase was found nearby a short time later.

He also pointed out that the man was taken to the bridge, which connects Clifton in Bristol with Leigh Woods, by taxi. The taxi driver’s vehicle was impounded and the driver is cooperating with the police.
Bristol Deputy Chief Constable Vics Hayward-Mellen stressed that “this is a very worrying incident and I fully recognize the concern it will cause in our communities”. He then added that “our immediate priority is to locate the man who took the suitcases to the bridge, to identify the deceased and to inform their next of kin.” Finally, the executive of the British police underlined that “special officers are ready to provide them with any support they need”.
