The two earthquakes that shook the coastal area of the Arequipa region, in the south of Peruthis Monday, no damage has been reported so far, according to official sources. The first had a magnitude of 5.2 and the second 4.6, with a difference of only five minutes between them.
The first quake was recorded at 9:03 a.m. local time (2:03 p.m. GMT) and had a magnitude of 5.2, with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, 62 kilometers south of the coastal district of Lomas, in the province of Caravelí, according to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP).
Two earthquakes hit the Peruvian coast
According to the official report posted on social media, the first earthquake had a depth of 36 kilometers and was felt with an intensity of III in the district of Lomas.
Just four minutes following the first quake, at 9:07 local time (14:07 GMT), another tremor of magnitude 4.6 was recorded, with its epicenter located 45 kilometers south of Lomas and at a depth of 29 kilometers.
Both the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) and the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) reported on the two earthquakes recorded, however, no personal or material damages have been reported.
On June 28, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck the coastal area of Arequipa, leaving at least ten people injured and damaging numerous homes, as well as health facilities, schools, roads and pipelines. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.
In relation to this, the president of the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP), Hernando Tavera, mentioned at that time that the structural damage was minimal because the distance from the epicenter of the earthquake “reduced the intensity of the waves.”
It is important to note that Peru is located in a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, where more than 80% of the world’s seismic activity occurs.
The last major earthquake to seriously affect Peru occurred in August 2007, off the coastal city of Pisco. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Pisco and the entire southern region of Ica, killing more than 500 people and causing significant damage to infrastructure and housing.
