Explosion in Türkiye leaves five dead and 63 injured

ISTANBUL, Turkey. — On Sunday, a police officer was explosion in a restaurant in the city of IzmirTurkey, which killed at least five people and injured 63 others, authorities said.

The explosion, apparently of a industrial propane gas cylinderoccurred in a restaurant in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood in Torbalı, Izmir, in western Turkey, authorities reported.

The explosion was captured on security cameras, devastating the street and causing minor damage to surrounding buildings.

The Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikayaindicated on social networks that dozens of members of the rescue personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The governor of Smyrna, Suleyman Elbanvisited the wounded in the hospital and announced that 40 of them had already been discharged.

Authorities have arrested a suspect who may be responsible. The man had replaced the propane tank with a new one on Saturday.
