Erba Massacre, “Murderers Still Around”. Azouz Marzouk Is Incredulous –

The final word on the Erba massacre? “We would like the victims to rest in peace and we trust that today this reshuffling of the same cards has ended, because there is no new evidence”, commented Massimo Campa, lawyer for the Castagna brothers, following the judges of Brescia rejected the defense’s request to reopen the trial in which Olindo Romano and Rosa Bazzi were sentenced to life imprisonment. “I spoke to my clients, Beppe and Pietro were together, and the word that represents them is ‘relief’, now they can try to turn the page. We had faith, we were not afraid of the truth, we had no doubts”, says the lawyer.

The reopening of the case had been requested by the prosecutor of Milan Cuno Tarfusser, convinced that the couple had been unjustly convicted. The evidence and arguments presented, however, did not convince the prosecutor. “We are satisfied because our requests were accepted. The judicial documents must be studied from A to Z and known how to read them and many who have commented on this case have not done so”, says the Attorney General of Brescia Guido Rispoli following the second section of the Court of Appeal decreed the inadmissibility of the request for review of the sentence.

However, one of the protagonists of those dramatic days is convinced that “the killers are still around”, said Azouz Marzouk following the sentence that effectively confirmed the life sentences for Olindo and Rosa. “I am disappointed, I remain convinced that it wasn’t them. Until the investigations are truly reopened I remain of my opinion”, said the father and husband of two of the four victims of the Erba massacre in the heat of the moment. Azouz, a civil party but convinced of the innocence of the convicted, when asked if it is time to apologize to the Castagna brothers, replies: “I don’t know them”. In the meantime, Romano’s lawyers have already announced that they will challenge the ruling: “A sentence has been issued, we will read the reasons and appeal to the Supreme Court”, says Fabio Schembri, one of Olindo’s lawyers.
