The San Bernardo Court of Guarantee decided to extend the detention of the two officials of the State Railways Company (EFE) who are accused of alleged responsibility in the collision of the two trains in San Bernardo.

The Criminal Investigation Department OS9 of Carabineros arrested a train driver and a railway controller from the public company following the serious accident that ended the lives of two workers from the private entity Ferrocarril del Pacífico (Fepasa), and in which nine people were seriously injured.

Specifically, the court accepted the request of prosecutor Pamela Torres, of the Western Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office, to collect background information.

Both officials will be charged this Saturday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m., for their alleged responsibility in the accident.

According to CNN Chile, at 00:15 hours on Thursday, a test train without passengers from the State Railways Company (EFE) and a freight train from the Pacific Railway (Fepasa) collided heavily on the main track, between Puente Maipo and Nos. As a result of the impact, two workers from the private company died, while nine people were seriously injured.

Eric Martin, president of EFE, said that a “thorough investigation” is required into what happened. “The railway machines have black boxes, similar to those of airplanes, with which movements and speed are recorded, and these are records that will be available to the investigation and to justice,” he commented.

For its part, Fepasa maintained that the freight train “had the corresponding authorization from the EFE Traffic Control Unit,” so “the collision occurred for reasons that are being investigated.”
